We are pleased to welcome Métis Canadian Story Teller, Author & Educator David Bouchard to Oaklands. David will be sharing his stories and books with students. Show your school spirit and love for reading by wearing your funky socks to school on Tuesday!Our entire school community will read together for D.E.A.R.Starting on January 29th, students can bring in gently used books to their classroom they would like to donate. Students are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite storybook character on Friday. Remember to bring the book your character is in if possible!
Grade 3-5 student - 9:15am K-Grade 2 students -10:45amWear your favourite pair of socks, mix and match, or decorate an old pair you have!Primary students will be invited to read in the gym, intermediate students will read in the hallways. 1:00-1:30pm On Thursday, each child, in every classroom will participate in the Book Swap. Students will choose 1 (or possibly 2) new books to them. At 1:00pm we will conclude our week of celebrating reading with a Friday assembly. We will also “reveal” our mystery readers!
Daily:
·         Loonie and Toonie Drive for Books for Syrian Refugees: Students can bring in donations starting Monday, January 22nd. Our donation drive is in conjunction with the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA).
·         Guess the Mystery Reader: Students can “guess” the Oaklands staff reader for a chance to win a fabulous book! These mystery readers will change daily. Our great reveal will take place at Friday’s assembly and our student winners will be announced there.
·         Book Swap (January 29-Feb 7): Drop-off gently used books in classrooms starting on Monday, January 29th. Students will have the opportunity to pick a “new book to them” on Thursday. Please ensure donated books are in good condition. Students can bring as many gently used books as they like.
·         Library Open @ Lunch: Our library will be open each lunch-recess for students to come and in and read, read….read!

Welcome to Oaklands

Oaklands Elementary School is a vibrant community school that encompasses a population of approximately 485 K-5 students. The school building is organized into an intermediate area (Grades 3-5) and a primary (Areas K-3) area. Students are instructed in Fine Arts, Athletics, Core curriculum (Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies), Social Responsibility, French (Grades 4-5), and Health and Career.
